Methods for Collecting Wind Data

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS PROVISIONAL DATA AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE...

Here are the wind data from June 1, 1997 00:00:00 through December 31, 1997 23;45:00. The data are in columns in the following order:

year (always 1997 for this data), month, day, hour (military convention, i.e. 0-23), minute, second (always 0 for this data), speed in meters/second, direction in degrees. Note the following convention for wind direction:

Direction reported in files is direction FROM which the wind is blowing.
0 is a wind from the North
90 is a wind from the East
180 is a wind from the South
270 is a wind from the West

This data was collected originally by Ed German of the USGS, egerman@usgs.gov.

Gaps in the original data have been filled by linear interpolation of the wind speed and wind direction. For data collected between September, 1995 and January, 1998, less that .2 percent of the data has been interpolated. In addition, the vast majority of the interpolations are over single missing data points. If further information about the interpolations is required, please contact Harry Jenter, hjenter@usgs.gov, (703) 648-5916.
