Antlers
Guard Station -
Oregon
Wallowa-Whitman National Forest
Imagine
a time before homesteaders and pioneers, when the area was home to
Native Americans and abundant wildlife. A river runs through the dry
area, and the blackened rocks and bluffs along its banks tell
of the Indian practice of setting fire to the reeds and grasses each
autumn so they would grow back more lush in the coming spring. Upon
seeing such a sight, the trappers and fur traders of the early 1800s
gave these rushing waters the name Burnt River. A century later Antlers
Guard Station, one of many sturdy little cabins throughout the forest,
was built in an effort to preserve the land.
