Timpanogas
Shelter -
Oregon
Willamette National Forest
Awake
at the first glimmer of dawn, collect rod and reel, step out of Timpanogas
Shelter and onto the banks of the lake, and cast. By the time morning
has broken and the varied thrushes and other songbirds are in full
chorus, the campfire crackles and the smell of pan-fried trout fills
the air.

History
The shelter is a modern structure patterned after the old Civilian Conservation
Corps Three Sided Shelter and was built with the help of a University of
Oregon outdoor school class and the Walker Rim Snowmobile Club. Construction
was completed in 1991, and rental of the site began in 1996.
Description
The rustic 15' x 18' one-room shelter includes a sleeping
loft, a table, solar lights and a wood stove (firewood is not provided).
Enjoy campfires and barbecuing on the outdoor fire ring. There is no drinking
water on site, but water is available from a hand pump at the nearby campground until
late September.

Attractions & Activities
The cabin is located on the banks of Timpanogas Lake. Anglers enjoy fishing
(for brook trout and cutthroat) on upper and lower Timpanogas Lakes, even
though the lakes are closed to motor craft. Those not inclined to fish can
enjoy hiking on 20+ miles of trails in the Timpanogas
area, especially in
late August when huckleberries are ripe for picking. Also enjoy mountain
biking on marked trails, canoeing, and photographing the beautiful scenery.
Amenities
There is space for additional camping nearby, with a maximum of 20 people
for the entire area.
Pets
Pets are welcome.
Smoking
No smoking.
Directions
Drive south on I-5 from Eugene. Take the Exit for Highway 58 east. Drive
east 34 miles on Highway 58 through Oakridge. Continue on Highway 58 about
1 to 1.5 miles east of Oakridge. Turn right towards Hills
Creek Reservoir on Forest Service Road (FSR) 21. Follow FSR 21 south and southeast for approximately
32 miles. Turn left on FSR 2154, traveling southeast for approximately 9
miles. Just after a switchback, turn left on a gated, unmarked spur to shelter.
The route is accessible by car, but requires traveling eight miles of narrow
gravel roads.
Warning
High elevation lakes attract heavy concentrations of mosquitoes a month
or more after snow melt, so come prepared.
