  THE PINK PANTHER, ENERGIZER BUNNY, SMOKEY BEAR AND OTHERS
        MEET TO CELEBRATE HALF CENTURY OF TRADEMARKS
                              
ARLINGTON, VA -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will
celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Trademark Act at the
Fourteenth National Trademark Expo to be held in Washington,
D.C. on October 18, 19, and 20.  This free event is open to
the public and designed to educate consumers about
trademarks and their value in society, especially in the
U.S. marketplace.  Children are welcome, as this event
promises to feature lots of activities, photo opportunities
with famous trademark characters, free product samples,
exhibits and historical information on trademarks.

Event:    National Trademark Expo

Date:          Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 18, 19,
and 20, 1996

Time:          10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Place:         Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium (on Constitution
Avenue, between 12th/14th
          Streets, NW).

Sponsor:       U.S. Department of Commerce, Patent and
Trademark Office

Confirmed Attendees (include):  The Pink Panther, Energizer
Bunny, Smokey Bear, Matty Mattel, Trix Rabbit, plain and
peanut M&Ms, Punchy the Hawaiian Punch Man and Barbie.


Special media tours will be given on Friday, October 18,
1996 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m, but members of the media
are welcome throughout the expo.
