Kansas Water Use information is critical for water supply planning, regulation, and scientific studies that further our understanding of water resources.

Data presented on this web page for Kansas include estimates of freshwater withdrawals for Kansas Water Use information is critical for water supply planning, regulation, and scientific studies that further our understanding of water resources. Data presented on this web page for Kansas include estimates of freshwater withdrawals for public supply, domestic, irrigation, livestock, aquaculture, industrial, mining, and thermoelectric water uses. These data are collected in cooperation with State and other Federal agencies, and are published along with data from other States in the report, Estimated Use of Water in the United States. This report has been published every five years since 1950. The most recent report available is for 2000 (Hutson and others, 2004), and the next report in this series will present information for 2005.

Kansas water-use data for 2005 by category can be accessed using the Kansas Water Information by county(KWIN). For further information on definitions, guidelines for data collection, publications, and to download data for 1985-2000, please visit the National Water Use Information Program web page at http://water.usgs.gov/watuse/.

Water-use data are collected on an annual basis by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Water Resources, as part of this agency’s role in managing water rights and water resources in Kansas (http://www.ksda.gov/appropriation/). The Kansas Water Office uses the data in its programs involving water planning, water conservation, Water Assurance Districts, and Water Marketing (http://www.kwo.org/).

Annual publications of Kansas municipal and irrigation water-use data are prepared by the USGS, DWR, and KWO. The most recent year’s reports are available on-line at the Kansas Water Office Reports & Publications or by contacting one of these agencies.
