Heppner Ranger District

The Heppner Ranger District is located in Heppner, Oregon. The District embraces 212,213 acres of the beautiful Blue Mountains, which includes portions of Grant, Morrow, Umatilla, and Wheeler Counties. There are approximately 500 miles of open roads to travel on, 27 miles of trails to hike, and 248 miles of streams that flow into 3 major rivers within Eastern Oregon.

Hunting, camping, and ATV/OHV riding are just some of the main attractions. The District also has Ditch Creek Guard Station and Tamarack Lookout Cabin available for rent. Bald Mountain Loop and Copple Butte Trail System are great for hiking or horseback riding, and they offer great views of the surrounding area.

If you’re looking for a great recreational experience and want some relaxation by a lake, Bull Prairie is the place to go.

Penland Lake Campground

Enjoy some peace and quiet at Pendland Lake while trout fishing from your boat or the bank.

Hiking

There are a variety of trails available, of which several are suited for horseback riding and mountain biking, in addition to hiking.

Hunting

The District supports large deer and elk herds and many other game and non-game species. Among the more unique species to inhabit the District are the cougar, great gray owl, and turkey vulture.

Blue Mountain Scenic Byway

The Blue Mountain Scenic Byway offers a variety of scenery along with historical sites and numerous recreational opportunities.

ATV/OHV Opportunities

The Heppner Ranger District is soliciting public input to help identify designated routes for off highway vehicles (OHV) on public lands on the west side of the district.
