Who is eligible?

Eligible candidates include wildlife, fisheries, botany, hydrology, watershed, timber, and other resource professionals with a degree in wildlife, fisheries, plant management or related fields and generally 5 years experience in resource management. A few workshops are applicable to technicians.

Line officers are encouraged to apply. Of specific interest are:

• Natural Resource Policy, Values & Economics
• Endangered Species Act for Line
• Water Resource Management for Line Officers
• Plain & Simple! Document Writing

Resource specialists from Cities, Counties, State, Tribal, private industry, other Federal agencies and the general public are also welcome. Contact the National Program Leader or the vendors if you have any questions.

International professionals are welcome to participate in any of the workshops. Workshops do not (usually) have an international perspective, but topics may be broadly applicable. Unfortunately, we do not have funding for international travel or tuition. Contact the National Program Leader or the vendors if you have any questions.

Entry Level/New Employee Training

Entry Level/New Employee training (Forest Service) was initiated in 1986. It consists of week-long workshops helping new employees better understand the Forest Service and be more effective in their respective roles. Participants learn the fundamentals of resource programs, Forest Service culture, and acquire skills that contribute to effective and satisfying careers.

Regions are responsible for conducting this training. Contact your Forest Service Regional Coordinator or regional Human Resources Training staff for further information on dates for workshops. The workshops are usually titled "Integrating Natural Resource Professionals into the Forest Service."

Rest of Career Training

"Rest of Career Training" (post Entry; formerly called "Mid-career") was initiated in 1987, and is the Continuing Education program described here. It consists of graduate-level workshops hosted by selected universities and institutions. The workshops are designed to increase the productivity and effectiveness of experienced natural resource professionals and technicians on Forest Service management teams. They provide natural resource professionals with knowledge and skills needed to become leaders in integrated resource management. These workshops are rigorous (e.g., tests, exercises, and projects) and will require work. Instructors for each workshops are leaders in their fields and include university professors, experienced Forest Service managers and researchers, and others.
