During the past two decades, the agency's thinking has evolved to embrace the sustainability paradigm as a robust more complete articulation of the notion of conservation in the 21st Century. Our thinking has been recorded in mottos such as "the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run" and "caring for the land and serving people," and in our mission statement. Our mission statement is a succinct articulation of sustainability thinking applied to our agency's unique place in the world: "Sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations." Here are links to two examples of national policies and initiatives that reflect this mission statement.
