* Prescribed Burn on the Valles Caldera National Preserve Postponed
A forecast for cloudy skies and a few showers has forced the Valles Caldera Trust to postpone the Valle Toledo Prescribed Fire which had been planned for this week on the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

* Stable Mesa Prescribed Burn
The Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest will begin a 6,200-acre hazardous fuels reduction project in Stable Mesa, 2 miles northwest of Jemez Springs, beginning Wednesday, September 21 through September 24, as weather conditions permit.

* Prescribed Burn Planned
Weather permitting, ignition of the Chaparral Prescribed Burn could begin Tuesday, September 19, 2005. This 2000-acre hazardous fuels reduction project is designed to reduce the threat of wildfire to the nearby community of Seven Springs.

* Prescribed Burn Update
September 12 - 15, 2005 , fire managers will continue to treat hazardous fuels within the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed as weather conditions permit. September 15 - 18, 2005 , fire managers will treat 657 acres, 10 miles east of the Village of Pecos, off of Forest Road 83, 2-miles west of Barillas lookout tower as weather conditions permit.

* Interagency Incident Management Team Providing Relief for Hurricane Katrina
The day before Hurricane Katrina crashed ashore, New Mexico’s Interagency Incident Management Team was staged in Alexandria, Louisiana.Dispatched as part of the hurricane relief effort, the team is providing support for the receipt and distribution of supplies and resources at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mobilization center at Camp Beauregard, located in central Louisiana.

* Prescribed Burn Update
Fire managers have completed this week’s burning activity in the Santa Fe Watershed. Burning in the Santa Fe Watershed will continue next week, possibly Monday or Tuesday. Pecos/Las Vegas District will begin with their 657-acre Sebadilla burn on Wednesday, 7th of September

* Capitol Holiday Tree 2005 - Welcome Back Students and Teachers
This year the Santa Fe National Forest will be delivering a beautiful, 80 foot Engelmann spruce tree that will adorn the nation’s capital. Teachers and students from all New Mexico schools: public, private, charter, parochial are invited to participate in making and donating 3,000 ornaments for this large tree.

* Prescribed Burns Planned
Information about ongoing prescribed burns and prescribed burns planned for September. The purpose of these planned burns are, to reduce hazardous forest fuels, which in turn will reduce the threat of catastrophic fire.

* Prescribed Burn to Begin in Santa Fe Watershed
Fire managers will continue to treat, approximately 1,000 to 2,000 acres of hazardous fuels within the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed beginning Monday, August 29 through December, as weather conditions permit and resources are available.

* Forest Service Announces Selection of Contractor and Location for Human Resources Center
The USDA Forest Service announced today the selection of Masthead Land Partners, LLC as the contractor for the lease and construction of a human resources(HR) facility. This facility will be part of the Albuquerque Service Center which consolidates budget and finance, information technology and human resources management for the Forest Service nationwide.

* Fire Restrictions Eased
Changes in weather conditions over the past few weeks are allowing Forest managers to ease fire restrictions in the Santa Fe National Forest. Effective Friday, July 29, restrictions will terminate on the east side of the forest and areas on the west side of the forest will drop down from Stage II restrictions to Stage I.

* Santa Fe Watershed Educational Field Trips Scheduled
Santa Fe National Forest and the City of Santa Fe are sponsoring four educational field trips into the Santa Fe Watershed project area. "We’re into the third year of thinning and burning the overgrown forested area and we’d like to show people what the treated area looks like and update them on where we are in the overall project."

* Hyde Park Thinning and Prescribed Fire Project Open House
The Espanola Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest proposes a project to reduce hazardous fuels in forest areas east of Hyde Park Estates, near Hyde Memorial State Park, and adjacent to Black Canyon campground. A public “Open House” has been scheduled to share information about the project and to hear your ideas and concerns.

* Stage II Fire Restrictions
The west side of the Santa Fe National Forest will enter Stage II fire restrictions on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at 8 a.m. The east side of the Forest will remain in Stage 1 fire restrictions.

* Raws Fire Update
Fire crews and Mother Nature worked on keeping the Raws Fire to a minimum today. The fire burned approximately two and one-half acres within the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed.

* Fire in Santa Fe Watershed
Santa Fe Fire Zone reports the lightning-caused Raws Fire located in the Santa Fe Watershed, a mile-and-a-half northwest of McClure Reservoir is burning in open Ponderosa Pine stands and at this point is two acres in size.

* SFNF Enters Stage I Fire Restrictions
The Santa Fe National Forest will enter into Stage I fire restrictions beginning Wednesday, June 29, at 8 a.m. First level restrictions will limit campfires to developed camp and picnic grounds (where grills are provided). Smoking is permitted only in vehicles, in developed campgrounds, or in areas cleared at least three feet in diameter of all flammable material.

* NM National Forests Stop Fees at 9 Recreational Sites
Two National forests in New Mexico announced that fee collection at nine recreation sites will be stopped today. Halting fees at these sites results from an analysis required under provisions of the Recreation Enhancement Act of 2004 (REA).

* Federal Government and Pueblo of San Ildefonso Reach Accord
Southwestern Regional Forester, Harv Forsgren announced that the Federal Government and the Pueblo of San Ildefonso, in New Mexico, have reached an historic settlement of longstanding litigation. The Pueblo had sued the Federal Government for taking over 63,000 acres of aboriginal lands, as well as other claims arising from historical dealings between the Pueblo and the Federal Government.

* Jack's Creek Road and Recreation Areas Open Friday
Forest Service Road (FSR) 555, off of State Highway 63 (Pecos Canyon) will open to the public on Friday, June 10 at 10:00 am. The road was closed for public safety in May due to a road slump accelerated by record-breaking snow/rainfalls received this past year.

* Regional Forester Affirms Snowbowl Ski Area Improvements
Southwestern Regional Forester Harv Forsgren has affirmed the decision for the Snowbowl Facilities Improvement Project on the Coconino National Forest (NF) by Forest Supervisor Nora Rasure. This project authorizes ski area improvements, including snowmaking using reclaimed water.

U.S. Forest Service, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and Pecos businesses have mobilized support from state and local officials in attempt to expedite the repair of Jack’s Creek Road, Forest Service Road (FSR) 555 while identifying alternative recreation opportunities in the Pecos Canyon to increase temporary recreation capacity.

* Dalton Prescribed Burn Update
Operations resumed yesterday after a five-day break from burning in Dalton Canyon, approximately 7 miles northwest of Pecos, New Mexico. Yesterday, fire personnel successfully burned 140 acres. Operations are scheduled to resume this morning

* Dalton Prescribed Burn
Weather permitting, the Pecos/ Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest plans to burn approximately 959 acres over a 7-day period beginning Thursday, May 12 th . The Daltom Prescribed Burn will take place in Dalton Canyon, approximately 7 miles northwest of the community of Pecos, New Mexico, off of Forest Service Road 123.

* Wildland Firefighter Training Announcement
This is an entry-level course required for qualification as an entry level Wildland Firefighter (WILDLAND firefighter II) by NWCG standards. This 4 day course provides the trainee information on safety, use of tools, equipment, water, hose lays, suppression tactics, communications, fireline construction, the 10 standard fire orders, the 18 situations that shout watch out, WILDLAND fire terminology, weather, fuels, topography and an introduction to the NIIMS-Incident Command System.

The Santa Fe National Forest has posted the April 2005 – June 2005 edition of the Schedule of Proposed Actions. The Schedule identifies proposed National Forest land and resource management projects currently undergoing the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) environmental analysis process on the Forest.

* First Wood Chip-Fired Biomass Heating System in New Mexico
The first large-scale, biomass-fired heating system utilizing wood chips from small diameter tree thinning projects in New Mexico is taking place at a school in Gallina in Rio Arriba county. A ribbon cutting ceremony for federal, state and local dignitaries is scheduled for Tuesday, March 29, 2005 starting at 8:30am.
