* Gallina Prescribed Burn
On Monday, December 8, fire personnel will begin a 3,570 acre prescribed burn in the Banco Chavez Area of the Coyote Ranger District, directly south of the village of Gallina.

* Prescribed Burn Update
Watershed Pile Burning: Operations have been halted in the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed until the area receives another adequate snowfall which may take several days.
Ranch Bales Pile Burning: Operations continue today. Since the project began, 70 acres have been accomplished. The burn area includes approximately 300 acres of piles and fire crews are burning an average of five to ten acres per day.

Watershed Pile Burning: Operations resume today in the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed. Burning will continue through the week as weather permits. To date, approximately 350 acres of piles have been completed.
Ranch Bales Pile Burning: Burning continues today and will continue as weather allows. Since the project began, 35 acres have been accomplished.

Watershed Pile Burning: There will be no burning today, or the rest of the week. Operations will resume Monday, December 1 weather permitting.
Ranch Bales Pile Burning: No burning today. Fire crews will work tomorrow if weather cooperates, and then halt operations until Monday, December 1.

* Prescribed Burn Update
Watershed Pile Burning: Work continued today. Approximately 350 acres of piles have been completed in the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed. Burning will be suspended through the weekend, and begin again on Monday.
Ranch Bales Pile Burning: Fire crews accomplished 35 acres of piles this week. There were 80 piles burned in total from the recent small diameter thinning. Operations will be suspended this weekend, and resume next week.

Fire crews held the Cochiti Fire at an estimated 130 acres today with minimal fire activity. The fire line is complete, but containment is fixed at 75% until the line can be strengthened.

* Monitoring the Smoke
During the past few days, smoke from the Molina Complex in the Pecos Wilderness has settled into local communities. Smoke is an unpleasant component of wildfire because it affects large segments of the population. To gauge the health hazards of smoke, the Forest Service and other agencies are testing air quality through different methods in Santa Fe, Española, and other areas.

* Virgin Fire Camp Moved
Three prairie dogs in the base camp used by firefighters working on the Virgin Fire were observed to be behaving in a strange manner. Lethargic and bleeding from the mouth, they were believed to be either sick or injured. To avoid potential exposure of personnel to any disease contagious to humans, the camp was moved to another location.

Investigation into the origin of the Virgin Fire, 3 miles northwest of Jemez Springs has shown the cause was a small abandoned campfire.

Santa Fe Fire Zone Dispatch announced forty two lightning-caused fires have been reported in the Santa Fe National Forest this past week. “The good thing is we’re also receiving moisture,” said Paul Orozco, Santa Fe National Forest Fire Management Officer.
