Sleep disorders affect more than 70 million Americans, including children. The most common sleep disorders are Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, Restless Legs Syndrome, and Narcolepsy. Sleep disorders and sleep deprivation can produce daytime behavior problems including difficulty staying awake, difficulty sitting still, and misbehaving in class. If you have any students with these problems, discuss their sleep habits and sleep duration with their parents.
Sleep deprivation can cause daytime hyperactivity and decrease in focused attention. This can be mistaken for Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) or other behavior disorders.
