    On Wednesday, July 1, the U.S. Ambassador, Stephen McFarland, delivered to the Guatemalan Ministry of Health a donation of specialized technological equipment valued at $111,000 to be used for the detection and tracking of the influenza A(H1N1) virus in Guatemala.

Statement by U.S. Ambassador Regarding Joint Operation in Zacapa
A joint operation between the Guatemalan Public Ministry, National Civil Police, Military, and the U.S. Government took place today in Zacapa. The government of the United States, at the request of the Guatemalan government, provided support with equipment and personnel, including members of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas Shannon, Jr., visited Guatemala Thursday, March 19 through Saturday, March 21, 2009, his first visit to Guatemala since President Obama took office. Prior to his arrival in Guatemala, Assistant Secretary Shannon visited El Salvador and Honduras.

The U.S. and Guatemala Implement Merida Initiative
The U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala Stephen McFarland signed today a letter of agreement with the Government of Guatemala that puts into effect the Merida Initiative, a multi-year regional effort to combat organized crime.
