Journalists meet prior to Obama visit in Ghana
July 2009 - President Obama’s first visit to sub-Saharan Africa was of great interest across the continent. To emphasize the importance of the visit and to focus the Congolese media’s attention, the US Embassy Brazzaville gathered 13 media professionals on July 9, 2009 to discuss the significance of the visit to Africa.

A Good Old-fashioned Spelling Bee….
May 2009 – The January – May English classes ended with a popular American theme – a spelling bee. The 120 Congolese who have participated in the English classes did not understand the concept, but caught on very quickly as the competition progressed.

World Press Freedom Day
May 2009 – Congolese journalists gathered at the U.S. Embassy for an afternoon of discussion and sharing ideas about the ethics, responsibility and professionalism of being a journalist. This came at a most appropriate time as the Republic of Congo is gearing up for presidential elections on July 12.

International Women’s Day Celebration
March 5 and 6, 2009 – Embassy Brazzaville celebrated International Women’s Day with a two-day workshop that invited 80 young Congolese women to participate in presentations on health, education, SIDA and non-governmental agencies that provide shelter and assistance.

U.S. Ambassador Presents Visas
On February 20, 2009, U.S. Ambassador Alan W. Eastham presented two visa applicants with the first visas to be issued by the new Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy located on Maya Maya Boulevard. These are the first visas to be issued by the U.S. Embassy in Brazzaville since June, 1997.
