Pilot Schools of American English in Kyrgyzstan

August 20.  Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller announced the opening of a new project, entitled “Pilot Schools of American English in Kyrgyzstan”.  These seven American schools, one in each region of Kyrgyzstan, will receive new textbooks with American English and culture, and a series of trainings for their teachers and directors.  This is the first such project in Central Asia.  Ambassador Gfoeller called the new project “a symbol of the partnership between America and Kyrgyzstan, and a strong basis for improving this partnership through mutual understanding.” ambassador's remarks

Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller Attends Press Conference to Launch USAID’s Food Assistance Program
August 13, 2009.  Ambassador Gfoeller announced USAID’s Food Assistance Program that will help meet the immediate food needs of approximately 220,000 vulnerable individuals in rural areas of the Kyrgyz Republic. 
As part of this program, USAID funds of $4.3 million are being used to distribute over 5000 metric tons of flour, oil, and beans that are being purchased from primarily Kyrgyz vendors.  This food assistance represents the continuation of on-going U.S. Government assistance to enhance food security in Kyrgyzstan. more...

Ambassador Gfoeller Opens Green Border Post at Kadamjai in Batken Oblast
On August 11, Ambassador Gfoeller traveled to Batken Oblast to officially open a Green Border Post in Kadamjai.  At the ceremony, the Ambassador also marked the opening of four other Green Border Posts in Batken Oblast: Yntymak, Palman, Kaitpas, Chekelik. 

The initiative to construct 24 new Green Border Posts was jointly funded by the U.S. Embassy Export Control and Related Border Security Program and the U.S. Central Command. Since the Export Control and Related Border Security Program began in Kyrgyz Republic in 2000, it has provided 20 million dollars in technical assistance to secure Kyrgyzstan's borders. ambassador's remarks

The Kyrgyz Republic’s July 23 Presidential Election
July 27, 2009.  The United States shares the concerns voiced by many observers of the Kyrgyz Republic's July 23 presidential election.  While the electoral process had some positive elements, the United States concurs with the preliminary findings of independent observer groups like the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) that the election failed to meet many of the Kyrgyz Republic's international commitments. more...

High-Level Delegation to Visit the Kyrgyz Republic

Burns and a high-level American delegation visited Bishkek on July 11-12 to discuss a range of bilateral issues with Kyrgyz government leaders. Ambassador Gfoeller Welcomes 56 New Peace Corps Volunteers in the Kyrgyz Republic
On June 10, Ambassador Tatiana C. Gfoeller presided over the swearing-in of Peace Corps Volunteers in a ceremony in the city of Kant.  They will serve as English language teachers, health promoters, and with non-government organizations around the country.  The Ambassador commended the Volunteers for their commitment to serve in local communities and encouraged them to use President Obama’s Cairo speech to the Muslim world as an opportunity for further dialogue and action with Kyrgyz partners.  “I believe Kyrgyzstan has the potential to be a true bridge between peoples, in the tradition of the great Silk Road”, the Ambassador said.  Full text

Ambassador Gives Colorful Painting to Children's hospital
On June 1, International Children's Day, Ambassador Tatiana Gfoeller presented a colorful mural painted by General Electric staff to the City Children's Hospital in Bishkek.  "I hope that this colorful sea horse will bring a bit of cheer to the young patients and their doctors," Ambassador said.

Groundbreaking Ceremony at Birdik Village
On April 15th, the Ambassador broke ground on the Birdik School, a $700,000 project sponsored by the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Military Cooperation and the Manas Air Base.

Fulbright Foreign Research Scholarship Program for 2010-2011 academic year

The State Department of the United States of America and the Embassy of the United States in the Kyrgyz Republic are pleased to announce the 2010-2011 Fulbright Foreign Research Scholarship Program.
