April was a busy month at Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge.  On April 1, staff from the Refuge assisted Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation with their Archery in the Schools State Tournament.  Staff members from Deep Fork, Wichita Mountains, Washita, Sequoyah, and Salt Plains staffed an educational booth and took turns with assisting with the scoring duties at the event.  On April 4, the Refuge hosted the "Divas of Deep Fork" Women in the Outdoors Event with 14 women in attendance to learn outdoor skills.  The Youth Controlled Turkey Hunt was April 10-12.  Two young hunters attended and one killed a 17 pound turkey.  The Adult Controlled Turkey Hunt was April 17-19.  Five hunters came to the Refuge to pit their skills against those of the turkey.  One hunter successfully harvested a turkey.  Lori Jones participated in programs for 25 students in the Wilson After School Program; 60 Girls Scouts in an after school program; an Earth Day event with 17 students and four teachers at the Cussetah Bottoms Boardwalk area; Sciencefest at the Oklahoma City Zoo with 5,136 students; and the Birding and Heritage Festival at Salt Plains on April 24-25.  The Refuge Friends group provided funding for a concrete pad to be poured from the asphalt trail to the new restroom facility and sidewalks to the pad for the new pavilion.  Installation of the pavilion began and had to be curtailed due to weather.
