During July 21-31, 2008, Koyukuk/Nowitna NWR hosted the 9th annual Galena Science Camp.  A highlight this year was a visit from dragonfly expert, John Hudson.  On July 25, science camp activities expanded to include the local community for a pot-luck cookout, a slide presentation on dragonflies presented by John, and a fun afternoon of dragonfly-catching for the campers.  During his stay in the area, Hudson collected 17 species of dragonfly and damselfly, making the Galena area the second most diverse in the State.  Collecting efforts at other times of the year may boost these numbers. The Refuge is looking forward to continuing to work on improving local awareness and understanding of these wonderful creatures.
