This year was the eighth year that Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Maine has hosted a Youth Conservation Corps crew.  The group was led by Bob Costa, third time returning YCC crew leader.  The eight-week program began on June 30 and ran through August 22.  The importance of safety was stressed during the first day of work and each enrollee was trained in CPR and First Aid.  The crew had a number of opportunities to get hands-on experiences and work with various refuge staff throughout the summer.  Some of the projects included constructing two observation decks (refuge visitor enhancement project), invasive plant removal at various locations around the refuge, building, vehicle, and trail maintenance, working with the plover technician to take down symbolic fencing and plover exclosures at Crescent Surf and Goosefare Brook beaches.  Summer interns at the refuge conducted presentations about tidal pools, New England cottontails, and sustainable living as part of the environmental education component of the program.  The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve also helped to provide environmental education opportunities to the crew.

From the feedback forms, the enrollees enjoyed constructing the two observation platforms and learning about the natural world.  Several of the students expressed a desire to apply for the program again next year.
