Chevron Completes Project to Protect Wildlife on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge
Chevron Completes Project to Protect Wildlife on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge may be known for moose, bears, and salmon, but a recent project coordinated by Assistant Manager Claire Clades has reduced threats to our feathered wildlife as well.  At the request of Refuge staff, Chevron recently covered several lined pits containing hydrocarbon and oil residue located in the Swanson River Oil & Gas Field. Steel frames with fine mesh netting were constructed to prevent birds from being attracted to standing rainwater in these pits which potentially would expose them to harmful liquids. Chevron had been diligent over the years in vacuuming these liquids from the pits, but in high rain years like this summer, it was difficult to keep up with water accumulation.  Accomplishing this project is an important step in protecting wildlife in the oil production area of the refuge.
