The New Jersey Field Office Partners to Reduce Bird Collisions
Northeast Region, August 22, 2008
Print Friendly Version
The Atlantic City Convention Center has agreed to partner with the Service's New Jersey Field Office to reduce the potential for bird collisions during migration. The Center has already begun implementing suggested best management practices, such as reducing the number of uplights used at night and turning lights off in meeting rooms with glass walls when not in use. The Center will also follow electronic reporting procedures and bird handling protocols for dead or injured birds. Senior Endangered Species Biologist Annette Scherer assisted Director Janet Mitrocsak in developing other restrictions for the fall bird migration season. Beginning September 1, the Center will turn off all outdoor uplights through the end of November. For some high-profile events, the Center may need to leave the lights on in the early evening while people are gathering for the event but will turn the lights off when it is underway. In most cases, the lights will be off well before 10:00 P.M., particularly during foggy weather.
