MV Togue Artifacts Transferred to NCTC for Display
Midwest Region, July 22, 2008
Print Friendly Version
On July 22, Fishery Biologist Aaron Woldt of the Alpena National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (NFWCO) transferred artifacts taken from the MV Togue, the Service’s original Great Lakes Stocking vessel, to Service historian Mark Madison of the National Conservation Training Center.  Mr. Madison drove to Alpena to pick up a list of artifacts including the following:  pilot house chair, chart desk, compass, GPS, GPIRB, life raft case, fire hose, life jackets, life rings, immersion suits, fire axes, marine radio, binoculars, log books, fish tank aerator control panels, and other instruments.  These artifacts will be preserved and used to create a display at NCTC documenting the MV Togue’s historic importance to lake trout restoration efforts in the Great Lakes.  From 1989 to 2006, the MV Togue stocked over 60 million lake trout fingerlings and yearlings in the upper Great Lakes in support of agency lake trout rehabilitation efforts.

In addition, the MV Togue steering wheel was retained in Alpena and will be displayed near the pilot house on the Togue’s replacement, the MV Spencer F. Baird.  Also, on July 31 some additional artifacts such as life rings, a fire ax, life jackets, an immersion suit, and a Togue coffee cup were transferred to our regional lake trout production facilities (Iron River National Fish Hatchery (NFH), Jordan River NFH, Pendills Creek NFH) for display in the hatchery visitor/interpretive centers.
