Kids Fishing Day at Alpena's Brown Trout Festival
Midwest Region, July 24, 2008
Print Friendly Version
The Alpena National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (NFWCO) was invited to participate in the annual Kids Fishing Day event during the Alpena Brown Trout Festival.  The event is hosted by the Alpena Optimist Club and was held on July 24, 2008.  Kids of all ages fished for brown and rainbow trout in the Culligan Plaza fountain in downtown Alpena.  Kids were allowed to keep their catch or to throw it back, and all were given prizes.  The event encourages fishing and provides kids with a connection to the annual Brown Trout Festival and its fishing tournament.

The Alpena NFWCO was one of several booths that participated in the event along with the Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts of America, and First Federal Bank of Northern Michigan.  The Service booth displayed fresh lake trout, whitefish, and sea lamprey specimens to educate the public about native and invasive species.  Coloring pages and games related to nature were also handed out.  The goal of the Service booth was to stir interest in fish, recreational fishing, and nature in an effort to connect children and their families with nature.  The Alpena NFWCO has participated in this event for a number of years.  Approximately 350 kids fished during the event, and approximately 700 attended overall.
