DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge: 50 Years of Preserving Our Future

DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge held two events to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the refuge.  On Wednesday March 12th, invited guest came to the refuge for a guided tour, lunch and a program about the past 50 years at DeSoto.  Guests included; our own Regional Director and Deputy Director, congressional staff, past employees, neighboring Refuge Managers, partners including; Nebraska and Iowa state fish and game, Corps of Engineers, professors from local colleges and universities, and numerous NGO's.  Then on the following Saturday an open house was held for the public.  The celebration included driving and walking tours of the refuge, live raptor presentation including a bald eagle, pallid sturgeon program, "Images of DeSoto" photography exhibit featuring local photographers, a chance to learn about the refuge's prescribed burning program and try on some fire clothing, Junior Refuge Manager Activity, other children's activities, cake and more.  Approximately 1,100 visitors participated in the event.
