Connecting People with Nature: Salmon-in-the-Schools in the Connecticut River Watershed
Northeast Region, March 18, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Thousands of students are caring for Atlantic salmon eggs in their classrooms this year.  Forty-two schools in western Massachusetts have just received eggs through a program called the Atlantic Salmon Egg Rearing Program jointly administered by the USFWS, Trout Unlimited and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. Some students have reported the sac fry hatching already.  Students use specially chilled aquariums to rear the salmon, feeding them when they are ready, and then stocking them into local streams like the Sawmill River in Montague, MA.  Teachers learn how to rear the juvenile fish and develop an understanding of the program at orientation sessions that are held in winter.  They show their students what it takes to release their young fish and to understand the needs and importance of this aquatic treasure.  One teacher, Mike Flynn, was recently awarded the Teacher of the Year Award in Massachusetts partly for his utilization of this hands-on environmental education tool.  Over 350 schools in New England are involved in the Salmon-in-the-Schools Program including 167 schools in the Connecticut River watershed.
