DeSoto’s 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday March 15th (1958—2008)

Please join us on  Saturday, March 15, 2008 from 10:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge to celebrate the 50 years of Preserving Our Future. 

Special Presentations,  Live Bird Program by Raptor Recovery NE at 1p.m.,  Images of DeSoto Photography Exhibit, Children’s Activities, Cake and Cookies

The event is free and open to the public.

Refuge Tours & Presentations:

Tours:  call the refuge at 712/642-4121 as space is limited for the following programs:

"Eagle Watch Tour" - Observe bald eagles on DeSoto and learn what the refuge is doing to provide habitat for these majestic birds and other wildlife. Driving tour. 2 hours.

"Protecting the Pallid Sturgeon Tour"  - How DeSoto is Lending a Helping Hand" 10:30 a.m. - Meet the so called “ugliest fish in America”. Learn about its unique features, habits and how it became endangered. Then caravan out to the Missouri River and see some projects taking place on the refuge that aim to help this ancient species. 1 hour.

"Missouri Meander Stroll Nature Walk Tour" - 11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m..  Stroll along a historic bend of the Missouri River, now called DeSoto Lake, amidst the towering Cottonwood trees. Wear sturdy shoes. Easy 1 mile walk. 1 hour.

"DeSoto: A Treasure for Wildlife and People Tour" - 12 noon.  Established in 1958 to provide habitat for migratory birds, DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge has blossomed into a cultural and natural treasure for our country. Auditorium. 40 minutes.

"Live Bird Program"  by Raptor Recovery Nebraska at 1:00 p.m..  Learn about our “feathered ambassadors” and get close-up views of them, including a bald eagle! This bird of prey program is presented by Raptor Recovery Nebraska, Inc. If possible, a rehabilitated raptor will be released. Auditorium. 1 hour.
