Erie National WildlifeRefuge- Wildland Urban Interface Project Completed
Northeast Region, September 12, 2007
Print Friendly Version
Refuge biologist, Norma Kline, and Northeast Region Fire Management Specialist, Gerald Vickers, initiated the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) project in early 2005 to reduce hazardous fuels and restore habitat on over 55 acres of refuge lands.  Thirty-five acres of fire prone exotic pine plantations located adjacent to state highway 27, local roads and residences in Randolph Township, Crawford County, PA were removed. In addition, the invasive plant multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora) was cut from in and around a globally rare shrub fen community on the refuge's Seneca unit.  This noxious weed was scattered throughout 20 acres in dense thickets.  The project was awarded to Utilities Forestry Services, Inc., Clearfield, PA via a formal bid process.  Poor weather conditions in 2006 delayed project initiation until 2007.  The project was completed by the contractor in mid-September 2007.

In addition to the work preformed by Utilities Forestry Services, Inc, WUI funds were used to treat smaller hazardous fuel sites on the Sugar Lake unit.  In late fall 2006 Gerald Vickers arranged for Northeast Region fire program sawyers, Fred Adams and Brandon Harriman, to remove isolated small stands of exotic pines near refuge parking lots and girdle several non-native pine in the vicinity of the highway that bisects the Sugar Lake unit.  Funds also were used to apply herbicide in early summer 2007 to the sprouting mulitlfora rose scattered in and around the shrub fen.  A second application will be made in 2008.  For this work Erie National Wildlife Refuge contracted with a local company, Hazlett   Tree Service, Townville, PA.
