The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge was the site of the 2007 Oklahoma BioBlitz on September 14 and 15.  The BioBlitz aims to educate people about the diversity of plant and animal life in a local area through hands-on experiences and nature interpretation.  A total of 1,009 species of plants and animals were identified during the 24 consecutive hours of searching the Refuge.  There were 250 participants that took part in the BioBlitz and 400 refuge visitors stopped by during the two days.  Also, 175 school children attended an education day on Friday 14 and participated in eight education stations including:  medicinal and edible plants, animal tracks, reptiles, endangered species and bird adaptation.  Organizations that took part in the two-day BioBlitz were: Oklahoma Biological Survey, Oklahoma City Zoo, Oklahoma Department of Tourism, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
