First Documented Green Sea Turtle Nest on South Padre Island (Laguna Atascosa NWR)
Southwest Region, September 12, 2007
Print Friendly Version

On September 12, the first green sea turtle nest ever documented on South Padre Island was found at approximately 10 p.m. between two public vehicle access points. Green sea turtle tracks had been documented on the Island before, but a nest had never been found. The female was found nesting by Cameron County law enforcement officers and reported to Sea Turtle Inc., the Refuge's primary partner in the South Texas Sea Turtle Nesting Project. The nesting female had no previous tags and was measured, tagged, and released at the nesting site. The clutch of 119 eggs was transferred to Padre Island National Seashore for incubation and release. This nest brings the total number of sea turtle nests found and protected this year on South Padre Island to a record 20 nests, including 17 Kemp's ridley, 2 loggerhead, and 1 green. The previous record for South Padre Island was 14 nests in 2006. Three additional Kemp's ridley nests were found on Boca Chica beach through this project, for a project record total of 23 nests in 2007.
