Moosehorn National Wildlife RefugeStaff Assists with International Oil Spill Drill
Northeast Region, September 11, 2007
Print Friendly Version

The staff of Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge along with Maine Coastal Islands participated with the Maine Ecological Field Office, Maine Inland Fishes and Wildlife, Service Division of Law Enforcement, Refuge Division of Law Enforcement,  Canadian Wildlife Service and the Office of the Secretary, DOI in CANSULANT.  CANSULANT 2007 was to exercise and demonstrate the capability of designated governmental agencies to provide a coordinated and integrated response to cross boundary pollution incidents.  This exercise was sponsored by the Canadian Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard as part of a biennial joint exercise conducted under the Joint Marine Contingency Plan.

The role of our wildlife team was to transport live wild ducks across the border and insure that all crossing protocols were covered under appropriate permits on the Federal, State and Canadian levels.  The ducks were transported and all paper work was found to be in order.  There were many agencies working on various response strategies throughout the next three days.  The headquarters was in St. Andrews, NB. Canada.
