In cooperation with the Chester River Keepers, a part of the Chester River Association, the refuge held a cleanup of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline south of Ingleside Recreation Area.  This cleanup was important due to the increased visibility of the refuge shoreline by kayak/canoe users enjoying the new water trail around the island. Twelve volunteers and one staff member participated in the morning cleanup which resulted in the disposal of twelve large bags of trash.  This trash contained many recyclable materials as well as tires.
