Northeast Region, March 26, 2007
Print Friendly Version

An 18-year-old Myerstown, Pennsylvania, student won Best-of-Show in the Pennsylvania Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest, according to Deputy Refuge Manager Gary Stolz of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, coordinator of the contest. Madelyn Yohn, a senior at Lebanon County Career and Technology Center, designed a pair of northern pintail ducks in acrylic medium that won First Place for grades 10-12, as well as Best-of-Show for the entire state of Pennsylvania.  Yohn's winning entry has been forwarded to the Best-in-the-Nation Competition, to compete with entries from all other states for the National Grand Prize.  This is Yohn's first entry in the contest, although she comes from a family of artists and has always been interested in wildlife art and conservation.  Madelyn has already been accepted to Harrisburg Area Community College where she will major in art education beginning this fall.

The Pennsylvania competition always draws a large number of quality works of art from Pennsylvania schools.  This year 581 entries were submitted to the contest from students in kindergarten through grade twelve, representing more than 40 public and private schools, as well numerous art studios and home school students.
