Southwest Region, March 30, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Federal, State, and Private partners assembled at Caddo Lake State Park for the second meeting of the East Texas Black Bear Task Force, which was formed to implement the July 2005 East Texas Black Bear Conservation and Management Plan 2005-2015 (Texas Bear Plan).  At this meeting, it was announced that the task force would be reorganized as a Sub-committee under the Black Bear Conservation Committee.   The mission of the Black Bear Conservation Committee is to promote the restoration of the Louisiana Black Bear in its historic range, through education, restoration and habitat management.

The task force also decided to prioritize implementation of the goals and objectives in the Texas Bear Plan associated with public information and education and suitable habitat conservation and management.   National Wildlife Refuge Managers Mark Williams of Caddo Lake and Stuart Marcos of Trinity River gave presentations on their respective refuges and discussed how their refuges fit into conservation of black bear habitat.  A Sub-committee Chairman will be announced and a mission statement will be developed at the next meeting of the task force.
