Journal Entry   Back Compilation of Results of 4th International Piping Plover Census Southwest Region, March 23, 2006 Print Friendly Version Robyn Cobb, biologist from the Corpus Christi Ecological Service Field Office (CCESFO), served as the Coordinator of the Central Texas coast portion of the 4th wintering ground census.  Service staff from CCESFO and the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge Complex, participated, along with a host of volunteers, in accomplishing this important survey that included beach and bay shorelines, emergent flats and the margins of bay islands from the southern end of Matagorda Bay to the Land Cut between the Upper and Lower Laguna Madre.  Snowy and Wilson’s Plovers, both identified as high priority species in the North American Shorebird Conservation Plan, were also counted.  Although bay water levels were exceedingly low and exposed a huge extent of emergent tidal flats and seagrass beds making access difficult, survey coverage was fairly comprehensive and the number of Piping Plovers sighted on the central part of the coast was greater than in any of the 3 previous surveys, totaling 1,080 individuals.   Contact Info: Martin Valdez, 505-248-6599, martin_valdez@fws.gov Send to: From: Notes: ..........................................................................................
