YUKON DELTA: Biologist Joins Salmon “Think Tank”
Alaska Region, February 21, 2006
Print Friendly Version
Yukon Delta Refuge Fishery Biologist Dan Gillikin joined an international cadre of fisheries biologists at the University of Montana’s Flathead Lake Biological Station to discuss past results and coordinate 2006 projects of the Salmon Rivers Observatory Network (SaRON).  SaRON is a long-term cooperative study of pristine river ecosystems throughout the North Pacific Rim Ecoregion.  Partners include: the Fish and Wildlife Service; the Flathead Lake Biological Station; Moscow State University (Russia); Wild Salmon Center (Portland, OR); US Geological Survey Alaska Science Center; Na'na'kila Institute and Kitimat Village Council, Kitimat, BC.

The Kwethluk River of Yukon Delta Refuge has been in SaRON for two years.  SaRON research is focused on understanding juvenile salmon use and distributions throughout habitat types of an alluvial floodplain. Managers can use this information to predict productivity factors in developing conservation strategies. This fisheries “think-tank” is rapidly expanding our understanding of aquatic ecosystems using cutting edge technology and a holistic approach to unravel the mysteries of salmon productivity.
