Bottomland Hardwood Forest Restoration
Southwest Region, December 20, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The first timber sale on Little River National Wildlife Refuge was completed on December 20, 2005.  The refuge harvested 440 acres of 25-30 year old monoculture pine plantations that had been planted prior to refuge acquisition.  The refuge conducted a formal bid process to sell the timber, and Bayou Timber Company from Texarkana, Arkansas was the successful bidder.  The timber harvested resulted in 23,068.08  tons of sawtimber and 12,765.58 tons of pulpwood being removed from the refuge at a total valuation of $890,308.37.  The removal of the pine plantations will allow the restoration and enhancement of the native bottomland hardwood forest.
