WICHITA MOUNTAINS NWR HOSTS CONTROLLED ELK HUNTS

Three controlled Elk hunts were conducted at the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge (WMNWR) during the months of November and December. The annual event is a cooperative effort between the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) and the WMNWR. A total of 234 permits were issued with 212 hunters participating. The total count taken was 66 bulls and 66 cows for an overall success rate of 62.2%. USDA/APHIS personnel collected samples from Elk to test for Chronic Wasting Disease.
