AK PENINSULA/ BECHAROF: Earth Day Celebration at King Salmon
Alaska Region, April 30, 2005
Print Friendly Version

Beginning on Friday, April 22nd with a live bird presentation at Bristol Bay School and ending Saturday, April 23rd with a recycling program kickoff, this year's Earth Day was very successful.

The weekend began with a live bird presentation courtesy of the Becharof & Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuges and The Bird Learning Treatment Center from Anchorage.  A rough-legged hawk was the center piece for interpretive programs regarding raptors held both Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, The King Salmon Visitor Center celebrated Earth Day with presentations, movies, a book sale, cake and prize drawings.  Along with the celebration, a new community wide recycling program was unveiled.  The "Cans to Books" program was initiated by the Becharof & Alaska Peninsula Refuges to help educate the communities.  Aluminum cans are collected and sent to Anchorage courtesy of Northern Air Cargo. Money generated from the recycled aluminum is donated to the Bristol Bay School library fund.
