Maine Fisheries Program Complex Outreach Staff Provides Stewardship Training
Northeast Region, May 22, 2005
Print Friendly Version
During May Atlantic salmon smolts head downstream from their fresh-water nursery habitats toward the sea, bound for the food-rich North Atlantic waters off Greenland. The alewives are coming in from the sea, bound for their spawning in inland lakes-- a cross-traffic pattern that's been going on for millennia. May is also the month that two Maine stewardship training organizations annually undergo training in the life cycle and natural history of the two species and their habitats. Thirty-six new trainees of the MidCoast Stewards and the Penobscot Bay Stewards organizations received training at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery and the Damariscotta River Association headquarters regarding the migration of Atlantic salmon and alewives, as well as watershed ecosystem dynamics in general-- their habitats, their resources, their economic value, the wildlife which inhabit them and the historic and present human impacts which affect their quality. The trainees are voluntees who, along with their training, possess a variety of professional and life skills which they collectively put to work with others on a selected project in their home regions to improve the quality of watersheds-- a most valuable partnership which benefits the quality of rivers, their wildlife, including endangered Atlantic salmon and alewives, as well as the quality of human life.
