Columbia River Basin Teacher Tour Kicks Off At Kootenai NWR
Pacific Region, July 10, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Columbia Basin Tour ?Columbia River: Headwaters To The Coast? 13-day tour kicked off its orientation and a barbeque at Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Northern Idaho. According to Donny Roush, Executive Director for the Idaho Environmental Education Association, the Tour was an ?unprecedented opportunity for teachers and community leaders to build and strengthen partnerships while developing a deeper and richer understanding and appreciation for the Columbia River Basin.? The Tour's 50 participants, seated at the Refuge's outdoor amphitheater overlooking wetlands inhabited by moose, received a warm welcome from Kootenai NWR's Refuge Manager.

The group's participants came as teams from various destinations within the Basin and shared their backgrounds and what they hoped to learn while on the Tour. Each team also brought with them a bottle of water collected from their watershed and poured it into a large container to symbolize their contribution to the Columbia River Basin. After their barbeque, the teachers viewed the Refuge's Environmental Education Center, walked on Chickadee Trail and the Myrtle Creek Falls Trail, and viewed moose and deer feeding nearby on the warm Sunday evening.

The Tour took the environmental educators on to British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon where they visited cultural centers, hydropower projects, fish hatcheries, and a nuclear reactor in order to network with various educators, community leaders, and receive a broad perspective of the diversity within the Basin.

The Tour was the result of a partnership of the Environmental Education Association of Oregon and North Cascades Institute with funding provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with the National Park Service.
