Refuge-Coordinated Effort Publishes Collaborative List of Invasives
Northeast Region, May 22, 2005
Print Friendly Version
For several years, Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge's Invasive Plant Control Initiative Coordinator, Cynthia Boettner, has coordinated the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group (MIPAG). This group, a collaboration representing organizations and professionals concerned with the conservation of Massachusetts? landscape, includes members of the nursery industry and a variety of conservation organizations. The group recently completed two documents regarding invasive plants in the state. MIPAG was charged by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs to provide recommendations to the Commonwealth regarding which plants are invasive and what steps the Commonwealth should take to manage these species. The first document, entitled The Evaluation of Non-Native Plant Species for Invasiveness in Massachusetts, lists which plants are threatening or may soon threaten the Commonwealth's natural heritage. It also describes how this list was developed and who was involved. The other document, entitled Strategic Recommendations for Managing Invasive Plants in Massachusetts recommends actions that agencies, organizations, and businesses in the Commonwealth can take to improve upon the problem. Both documents are available at the following websites: the Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association (www.mnla.com), the New England Wild Flower Society (www.newfs.org), the Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (ww.ipane.org), and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife's Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program (www.nhesp.org).
