Expectations Exceeded at Bonytail (Gila elegans) Spawning
Southwest Region, April 20, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Expectations at the Dexter National Fish Hatchery and Technology Center (Center) were exceeded this season during the spawning of the bonytail chub. Twenty pairs of bonytails were spawned on April 20, 2005. This was the first spawning season for the 2000-2001 year class bonytails. The young females' average weight was 1.22 lbs, and each produced over 14,800 eggs per pound of bodyweight. These young fish produced over 306,000 eggs. These eggs were no larger than the head of a pin and hatched after 4 days. Over 20,000 fry were shipped to Wahweap State Fish Hatchery in Big Water, Utah as part of an agreement with Region 6 and restoration activities of the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program.
