Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Partnership Pursues Model of Landscape Changes Alaska Region, March 23, 2005 Print Friendly Version Government agencies, Native organizations, and conservation interests have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a landscape cumulative effects model for the Kenai Peninsula. The Alaska Landscape Cumulative Effects Simulator (ALCES) will be used to develop a comprehensive data base of natural and human-caused changes to the Kenai area landscape that will help us understand historic changes as well as predict future conditions. Using information on such things as fire history, spruce bark beetle outbreak, and urban development, the model will address future environmental and economic issues associated with transportation, oil and gas infrastructure, wildlife/fisheries management, housing development, and many others. Joining Kenai Refuge in this partnership are Chugach National Forest, Homer Soil and Water Conservation District, Kenai Fjords National Park, Kenaitze Indian Tribe IRA, Ninilchik Traditional Council, Port Graham Village Council, Seldovia Village Tribe, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Kenai Watershed Forum. Partners will share relevant public data and will receive modeling software and learn how to run predictive programs for a diversity of future-use scenarios.
