Northeast Region, March 9, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On March 9, the Chesapeake Marshlands National Wildlife Refuge Complex hosted 68 participants from 26 federal, state, and private organizations at its second annual science meeting. The agenda offered twenty-two presentations on a variety of research topics, including wetland restoration, endangered species, fire research, habitat management, avian research, and herpetological research. They included the geologic framework of wetland areas, restoring Chesapeake Bay wetlands by reducing salt water intrusion into fresh water areas, addressing sea-level rise, and restoring wetlands using clean, dredged material.

Researchers also discussed new ideas for future collaborative projects. Refuge complex staff collaborate with scientists at several agencies, including the U.S. Geodetic Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Army Corps of Engineers, National Aquarium in Baltimore, Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited, University of Maryland, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Department of the Environment and Dorchester Soil Conservation District. A third meeting is planned for March 8, 2006.
