Journal Entry   Back Management needs of the Sacramento Mountains prickly poppy Southwest Region, January 27, 2005 Print Friendly Version On January 27, 2005, the New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office hosted a meeting to investigate short and long-term solutions to improve the declining status of the Sacramento Mountains prickly poppy. Participants included: USDA Forest Service, University of New Mexico, Rio Grande Botanic Garden, New Mexico State University, private consultants, and the New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department. Some of the priority actions included: 1) watering poppy seedlings this year to investigate whether survival or recruitment is enhanced; 2) constructing monitoring exclosures around some poppies; 3) identifying and hopefully treating the fungal canker that has recently appeared on poppies; 4) surveying potential habitat within Forest Service and other land ownerships (e.g., BLM and private lands); 5) applying for National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and other grants; and 6) continuing germination studies under the existing section 10(a)(1)(A) permit issued to New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department. These actions will all benefit the conservation of the poppy.
