Journal Entry   Back Conservation Efforts for the Sacramento Mtns. Checkerspot Butterfly Southwest Region, January 20, 2005 Print Friendly Version With the help of Albuquerque Botanic Garden staff, the New Mexico Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (PFW) and other New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office staff planted approximately 650 New Mexico penstemon plants at the Albuquerque Botanic Garden on January 20, 2005. The New Mexico penstemon is the host plant for the Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly, a species found only in mountain meadows near Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Seed will be collected from these plants and used in future PFW projects to help restore butterfly habitat on private lands in Cloudcroft. The plants were grown at the Natural Resources Conservation Service's Plant Materials Center (PMC) as part of a PFW cooperative agreement with the PMC. Signs will be installed at the Botanic Garden's Butterfly Pavilion illustrating the relationship between the butterfly and the plant. This outreach and education effort will reach thousands of people who visit the Botanic Garden each year.
