Results Are In On Blackwater Refuge's Midwinter Eagle Survey
Northeast Region, January 11, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge conducted its 26th annual midwinter eagle survey on January 6. The collaborative effort involved four refuge employees and 20 volunteers distributed across the refuge at stationary observation sites.

A morning fog produced poor viewing conditions, resulting in a count of only 33 eagles. This tally was dramatically lower than expected, prompting a second survey.

The evening -- or roost -- count produced 147 eagles, including two immature golden eagles.

On January 11, four refuge employees and 13 volunteers conducted a supplemental survey. The morning count produced far better and more accurate results than did the previous count. A total of 115 eagles, including one immature golden eagle, were recorded during the morning count. The evening count of 131 eagles was similar to the evening count of Jan. 6.

On January 11, 2005 a supplemental survey was conducted involving four refuge employees and 13 volunteers. The morning count produced far better, and more accurate, results than those from the sixth. A total of 115 eagles, including one immature golden eagle, were recorded during the morning count. The evening (roost) count, with 131 eagles recorded, produced similar results to those from the evening of the sixth.
