Transportation Enhancement Program Funds Scenic Overlook at McNary National Wildlife Refuge
Pacific Region, January 11, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The overlook provides a scenic view of the Wallula Gap area

Construction of the Wallula Scenic Overlook is nearly complete thanks to Transportation Enhancement Program funds provided by the Washington State Department of Transportation. The overlook and rustic kiosk structure are located adjacent to State Highway 12 offering views of the beautiful Walla Walla River valley and its? wildlife-rich wetlands and riparian habitats within McNary National Wildlife Refuge. The scenic location is also rich in American history as Lewis and Clark passed near the site on April 30, 1806 as they launched out on their overland return route from Wallula back to the Snake River at Lewistown, Idaho. Also within site of the overlook is the location where the Corps of Discovery collected the first scientifically described botanical specimens of cous biscuitroot and black hawthorn. As part of the construction project, Refuge outdoor recreation planner Art Shine worked with Washington State's Agency Assistance Team (involving the Washington State Historical Society, State Parks, Department of Transportation, and Tourism Office) to help prepare an interpretive panel depicting Lewis and Clark's encounter and exchange of gifts with Walla Walla Chief Yellept. This and additional interpretive panels will be added to the kiosk highlighting fish and wildlife resources, recreation opportunities, natural history, and wildlife management programs and practices used by the Refuge in maintaining healthy wildlife habitat.

The State's Transportation Enhancement Program is federally funded through the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). Road access, parking, hiking trail and other improvements are part of the ongoing project to make the scenic and historical site accessible and attractive to Refuge visitors.
