Journal Entry   Back Texas Colonial Waterbirds Southwest Region, November 10, 2004 Print Friendly Version The annual Texas Colonial Waterbird Society meeting was held November 10, 2004 in Victoria, Texas. This meeting is the forum for summarizing the results of the current year's census of nesting pairs of wading birds, pelicans, gulls and terns within the three regions of the Texas coast: Upper coast, Central Coast and Lower Coast. As compiler for the Lower Texas Coast count data, Robyn Cobb of the Corpus Christi Ecological Services Field Office, presented the results of the nesting pair counts for this bay system. Discussions of possible reasons for declines in certain species were an important part of the meeting. A discussion of ongoing and proposed research projects took place, along with listing additional research needs. Dates were set for conducting the 2005 census. The actual field work involved in carrying out the census each May-June, and participation in this follow-up meeting each fall are important to the Service's ability to ascertain the status of all coastal colonial waterbird species as well as the condition of their island habitats. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department also does aerial surveys of inland colonies to help assess the location, species composition, and abundance of colonial nesters away from the coast.
