Public Meeting Held to Discuss Detroit River's Grassy Island
Midwest Region, November 10, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Service held a public meeting on Nov. 10, in Wyandotte, Mich., regarding Grassy Island. Grassy Island, an island in the Detroit River and part of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, was previously used to dispose of contaminated dredge materials. Stephanie Millsap explained the process the Service is taking to investigate and address any potential releases of hazardous substances at Grassy Island to protect the environment and human health. The results of the recently finalized preliminary assessment and site inspection (PA/SI) of Grassy Island were discussed as well as the next steps in the process of remediation and restoration on site.

Members of the public were able to ask questions and discuss Grassy Island both in a group as well as one-on-one. Lisa Williams, from the Service's East Lansing Field Office and John Hartig, Detroit River International Wildlflie Refuge Manager were also on hand to answer questions.

A reporter from the New-Herald was also in attendance. Information from the public meeting was published in an article about ongoing efforts to clean up the Detroit River.

The complete PA/SI report and the slides used during the presentation are available online at http://midwest.fws.gov/grassyisland
