Huachuca Grasslands Monitoring Group
Southwest Region, November 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The initial meeting of the tentatively named Huachuca Grasslands Monitoring Group was held on November 1 & 2, 2004. The Sonoran Institue facilitated the meeting at Kartchner Caverns State Park. Agencies and groups in southeastern Arizona are struggling with how to complete required monitoring, in addition to trying to monitor "ecosystems" and ecosystem health and functioning. Recently completed land use plans and other plans in various stages, in addition to the National Park Service's Sonoran Desert Monitoring Network, have created the need and avenues to address how to monitor grasslands and ecosystems. The group decided to continue meeting, since addressing monitoring for this part of southeastern Arizona can serve as a template for other areas, in addition to meeting local needs. The Sonoran Desert Network and BLM's Las Cienegas National Conservation Area are pilots for their respective agencies regarding monitoring and plan implementation. The next meeting will focus on border issues and related impacts, and the opportunities presented by including the Border Patrol in our discussions.
