Russian Biologists Visit Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
Midwest Region, August 7, 2004
Print Friendly Version
A group of 24 Russian biologists visited Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge on August 7. These biologists from zapovedniks (nature reserves) and national parks throughout their country were participating in a Wilkes University class on use of geographic information systems (commonly called GIS)in natural resource management. The class was coordinated by the Service's Division of International Conservation (Russia-East Asia branch) in cooperation with the Pennsylvania GIS Consortium and the American Heritage River Program.

Refuge staff provided a presentation on the application of GIS at the refuge followed by a walking tour. Also in attendance were two translators, two Wilkes University professors, three staff members from the Service's Washington Office and one staff from the Service's Northeast Regional Office Division of Cartography.

The visit was enlightening for the Russian visitors as well as refuge staff. Additionally, three local papers printed articles on the visit.
